Harmonikids Hohner-sponsored Session for Sacred Heart School

    24 April, 2023

On March 24, 2023 I provided a Hohner-sponsored Harmonikids session to Sacred Heart Elementary School in Salinas, California. I taught seventy-five 4th and 5th graders (including those with learning disabilities) to play harmonica. All students were fully engaged throughout the 90 minute session. They giggled with joy and astonishment as I entertained them. Then each was thrilled as I gave them Hohner Harmonicas on which I gently taught them to accurately play four songs. An assembly of the entire school followed during which I performed and entertained while teaching fascinating history of the harmonica and its unique impact on American history. Then I conducted the fourth and fifth graders to perform the songs I had just taught them for the whole school. All beamed with self confidence and esteem as they proudly showed off their new musical talent to their fellow schoolmates and teachers. The wonderful session and assembly is described below by teaching administrator Connie Rains below.

When Gary came to our school in Salinas, the teachers were so impressed with how engaging he was with the students and truly amazed at what was taught in such a short time! Adrian, a challenged 4th grader who lost both parents at the age of 2, was especially excited about sharing his new harmonica with his grandmother and the songs he learned. I watched him as he blew with confidence and pleasure and was totally engaged with Gary. One of our very bright but shy 5th graders confidently played one of the songs solo for the whole assembly and his parents have told me he has not put the instrument down since he received it.  The younger students truly enjoyed the train sounds and Gary’s entertaining song performances including one in which he convincingly appears to play from his ear! Overwhelmingly, the assembly was truly something they will never forget and we would love for him to come back.
