Harmonikids Hohner-Sponsored Session for Youth with Disabilities at the Opportunity Center

    16 December, 2024

On December 11, 2024 I had the pleasure of providing a special Hohner-sponsored holiday Harmonikids session to 20 youth with mental disabilities in New Castle, DE. The Opportunity Center provides employment services and inclusive support to people with disabilities. Their "Framework for Success" is a school-to-work transition program for 18 - 22 year olds that provides opportunities for students to explore work while gaining skills and experience in real work situations while earning a paycheck. The goal is to transition and integrate disabled youth into the workforce, which promotes independence and a sense of pride and self worth. They were fully engaged and delighted as I entertained and taught them to play several songs including holiday favorites Jingle Bells and Silent Night on their new harmonicas. Facility director Rich Katz sent this feedback for the Harmonikids session below.

The Opportunity Center was thrilled to welcome Gary Allegretto, Grammy-nominated music artist and a favorite of our students and staff. Known for his extraordinary harmonica skills, Gary’s true talent lies in his ability to connect, engage, and inspire. His performance was nothing short of magical, captivating the audience from the first note to the last.

Gary’s session offered more than musical performance —it was an unforgettable journey through history, storytelling, and self-expression. His commitment to making music accessible to all is truly inspiring. Through his teaching methods, Gary uses the harmonica as a bridge to teach history, music, and life lessons, leaving a lasting impression on his audience. Everyone learned several songs on harmonicas donated by Hohner. The students left the event feeling upbeat, inspired, and ready to put their newfound harmonica skills into practice. I have never witnessed them so fully engaged for so long.

Thanks to Gary, for an incredible experience! We look forward to his next visit.
