A look behind the scenes of accordion culture
HOHNER Musikinstrumente GmbH had the opportunity to welcome a seven-person film team from Colombia.
The team from TONAL ENTERTAINMENT GROUP and GTC Ingeniería is currently busy filming a documentary about the accordion entitled ‘Polka Vallenata, de los Alpes al Río Cesar’, which plays a central role in the Colombian music scene, especially in the popular music style Vallenato.
Vallenato, a fascinating evolution of cumbia, has become a cultural phenomenon in Colombia, and the accordion is at the heart of this musical tradition. During their visit to HOHNER, the filmmakers had the opportunity to explore the production and craftsmanship behind the legendary Hohner instruments, which are appreciated not only in Germany but also worldwide.
After a brief introduction to the production of harmonicas by Product Manager Gerhard Müller, a more detailed tour of accordion production followed with Petra Zellmer - Technical Assistant in Research and Development at HOHNER.
‘It's a great opportunity to show the connection between our music and the instruments we love,’ said Jörg Hiller, the film's director. "The accordion is not just an instrument; it is a part of our identity and culture. We are excited to share the history and passion that goes into every accordion with the world."
The film team interviewed HOHNER employee Petra Zellmer, who was happy to share her many years of in-depth knowledge about the accordion. The filming also included short musical performances that emphasised the versatility and unique sound of both the accordion and the harmonica.
‘We are proud to be part of this documentary and to support the importance of the accordion in Colombian music,’ said the HOHNER employees. ‘It's inspiring to see how music connects people from different cultures.’
The documentary is expected to be released next year and promises to showcase the rich history and cultural significance of the accordion in Colombia.
